A farmer must perform various tasks throughout the crop lifecycle and must perform a different set of duties if he is raising livestock. Cleaning, tractor driving, ploughing, planting, managing livestock, feeding livestock, harvesting, marketing produce, carrying out intercultural activities, fertilising, irrigating, performing farm maintenance, and so on are the most important activities of a farmer.
Direct seeding and transplanting are the two most common methods of planting. Direct seeding is the planting of seeds in fields for crop production, whereas transplanting is the planting of saplings or seedlings grown in nurseries from seeds.
If freshly harvested grains are not dried before storage, they may spoil due to microbial infestation. Drying grains removes moisture from them, extending their shelf life, and reducing insect, pest, bacteria, and fungi attacks. If the grains or seeds are to be used for sowing, moist grains lose their germination ability very quickly. As a result, it is always recommended to dry the seeds up to 12% before storing them.
Prior to planting, seeds are chemically treated to protect them from microbial attack and decay. The primary goal of coating the seeds with insecticides and fungicides is to protect them from disease. Chemicals are also applied to the seeds in order to improve their ability to germinate.
